Willy is sweet, friendly, gentle, lovable, and enjoys any and all attention and affection. He is an easy companion for chores or relaxing. He is tremendously entertained simply by running around the yard, exploring and flushing out birds. He is happy-go-lucky and beautifully obedience-trained.

Willy has impeccable leash manners and is well on his way to passing therapy training - he is already more than capable of doing hospital or shut-in visits. He does not mouth, jump up, or physically “roughhouse.”

A herder and a guarder* by nature; Willy is intelligent, watchful, and generally calm. However he becomes excited at the prospect of chasing a bunny or cat! He has a curious, independent spirit - not demanding, only sociable, appreciative, and often silly. He's very in tune with human emotions and will thrive in a calm lifestyle with adults who notice his “smarts” and appreciate his desire to please.

Willy is fine with well-behaved children, however he will be placed in an adults-only home since little children have little child guests, and behavior of those guests cannot always be anticipated or controlled.

*Willy’s DNA test indicates 50% Great Pyr, the rest Lab-Shepherd, with a splash of Boxer!*

Willy loves to be massaged, brushed, spoken to, snuggled, and praised! He’s trustworthy in the home, and no worries about him brushing items off of the coffee table - his tail is a short, fluffy nub! Willy only seems to bark to announce when he hears or sees something or someone very interesting or that "doesn't belong".

As with any giant breed, daily exercise, quality large-breed nutrition, and joint supplements (fish oil, glucosamine/chondroiton) will maintain Willy's optimum health.

Willy is friendly with friendly, mature dogs. He is a gentleman and a peacekeeper, so no puppies, please. Willy seems to prefer adult shepherds and Labs, and he recently spent time at a foster home with an adult female Plott Hound.

  • "Fenced yard" means,  a backyard that is adjacent to and connected with your residence . (It does not mean a nearby fenced area/dog park.)
  • Gates must have padlocks and thresholds (cement or buried pavers to prevent digging.)
  • Yard and patio must be free of debris and have room for dogs to run and play on a lawn and/or a very shaded area.
  • We do not place dogs in situations where there are "drained" or empty swimming pools, which are a fall hazard and contribute to the propogation of mosquitos.
  • We DO NOT adopt to students as we have found that they often do not know or anticipate where life is taking them next.

Dogs remain posted while we screen potential adopters. As long as dog is designated "Available" we continue to accept applications.

We are staffed by all volunteers and use an application protocol to handle all inquiries about adoptable dogs. This system enables an efficiency that allows us to save and care for more dogs. Discussion about a dog - including scheduling of a home check or other dialogue - cannot occur until we have received your completed adoption applicationNO EXCEPTIONS. Thank you!
